ABOUT

WP2: "Hazard Scenarios & CI Vulnerability Assessment"

This package focuses on addressing hazard scenarios, critical infrastructure inventory, and vulnerability assessment within the project. It begins by identifying current and future hazard scenarios, particularly emphasizing earthquakes and flooding, and their interconnected impacts. Following this, efforts are directed towards establishing a comprehensive inventory of critical infrastructure, incorporating essential attributes and failure modes to better understand vulnerabilities. Finally, the project conducts vulnerability assessments of flood protection assets, utilizing fragility curves to prioritize mitigation strategies and enhance resilience against flooding hazards.

WP3: "Cascading Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment"

In this working package, the project will tailor a risk assessment methodology initially developed in CROSScade to urban infrastructure specifics. Using Bayesian belief networks, it will assess cascading effects from critical asset failures in identified hazard scenarios. Efforts will ensure clear communication with CIMs and CPAs, compatibility with CI Asset Management systems, and integration with the early warning system from WP4. Implementation on selected critical infrastructure will evaluate its effectiveness in mitigating cascading hazard risks, enhancing overall disaster resilience.

WP4: "Cascading Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems"

In this working package, the project aims to enhance hazard visualization and integrate it into existing IT platforms. Additionally, it seeks to establish technical requirements for sensor networks to provide real-time data for the Early Warning System. The project will develop a comprehensive Cascading Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (CHEWS) to deliver timely information to CI managers and first responders. Finally, the system will be tested in case study settings, with feedback used to refine and improve its functionality.

WP5: "Raising Cascading Hazard Risks Awareness"

This working package aims to foster public awareness and understanding of cascading hazards and their potential impacts. It seeks to achieve this by increasing awareness of the benefits and functionalities of IT platforms, risk scenarios, and the Cascading Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (CHEWS). Additionally, strategies will be developed to enhance public access to information on cascading risks. The project will also promote systematic engagement with stakeholders and audiences, implementing unique initiatives to involve local authorities and the public directly, ensuring sustained impact in pilot areas.
